5 Types of Bedding Items That Are Safe for Babies

by Milovan Simic October 17, 2017

A new baby can bring overwhelming happiness and joy to parents. Shopping for his or her bedding items should be a fun experience. However, your baby’s safety is very important so buying bedding items that are safe for them can be somewhat daunting as there are lots of options available on the market.

Following are 5 types of bedding items that are safe for babies:

1. Crib

A bassinet or cradle is a nice option for the first few months if you choose to have your baby sleep in your room at night.  However, you will need to get a crib when the baby gets bigger. When shopping for a crib, it is recommended that you purchase the one that meets the latest safety standards and also make sure that there isn’t much space between the slats.

2. Crib Mattress

When shopping for a crib mattress, make sure you buy a firm one. Soft mattresses are not recommended for babies as they make it hard to keep the bedding tight and prevent your baby from re-breathing stale air. As for material, you can purchase any organic one such as cotton, bamboo, etc.,  just remember to avoid the ones that are too soft. Also be sure to buy a mattress that fits well in the crib so that there is no space around the mattress that the baby can get their head or a limb stuck in.

3. Crib Mattress Pad

Just like all mattresses, crib mattresses are prone to capturing allergens and dust mites. That’s why you should consider buying an anti-allergen mattress pad to secure your baby’s health. You can also get a waterproof mattress pad as it will help protect against many unavoidable accidents. Just make sure that the pad is no thicker than 1 inch.

4. Blankets and Swaddles

Receiving and swaddling blankets are not considered dangerous for newborns and can be used in the crib. In fact, such blankets can be really helpful as they simulate the pressure and tightness of the womb so they will make the transition for the baby easier. Furthermore, they can also help improve neuromuscular development, reduce the risk of SIDS, and help the baby sleep longer.

5. Comforters and Quilts

Additional  bedding items such as comforters and quilts are essentially decorative elements that can enhance the overall look of your baby’s bedding. But, it is not recommended that you place them on the bed when your baby is about to sleep. Once your baby can crawl outside of the bed or stand, then you can use quilts without any problem. You can place them on the ground to cover it for comfort or cleanliness.

Conclusion

In conclusion, you simply can’t afford to compromise on your child’s health and safety. Therefore, buying bedding products that are made from organic materials such as bamboo, cotton, etc. is a must. By doing so, you will be making sure that your baby is having a comfortable, safe and sound sleep.
